Reading Reco Of The Month

Why is reading as we age important?

Just like moving our bodies is important as we age, so is exercising our brains. One of the best ways that we can exercise our brains is through reading.

As well as promoting better aging, reading prevents cognitive decline, enhances concentration, reduces stress and anxiety, improves memory, and creates connections through reading groups and meeting new people.

Word Games of the Month

            Why Word Games?

Word games help preserve brain health by sharpening reasoning and problem-solving abilities. Word games can also boost one's self-worth, reduce boredom and anxiety, inspire original thought, and even improve social skills. Furthermore, as word games stimulate and generate new brain cells, they can aid in preventing or slowing the progression of dementia.

            Why Puzzles?

Keeping our brains healthy requires exercise just as it does our bodies. There's no better way to exercise our brains than by solving puzzles! Puzzles offer numerous benefits to people living with dementia, such as promoting cognitive health and memory, activating both left and right sides of the brain, and socializing with friends and family.

           Why artistic expression?

The creative expressions offered by colouring, painting, and crafting have numerous psychological benefits. Artistic activities enhance memory function and alleviate psychological distress such as anxiety and depression. The pursuit of artistic expression activities has also been shown to slow cognitive decline, stimulate memories, and foster connections with individuals with dementia. The power of art lies in its ability to express emotions beyond our words.

Cooking and baking have many benefits for older people. For example, baking and cooking can stimulate the senses, which may be dulled or lost in people with dementia. Cooking and baking are highly tactile activities, perfect for experimenting with different textures and sensations, as well as improving hand-eye coordination and motor skills. It also increases appetite ,promotes socialization and memory recall.
